Recycled with Love started back when I lived in Watford. We didn't know anyone so I would just spend all my free time buying old curtains and duvets from charity shops and make them into new exciting things! I would make birthday gifts for my family and friends and they were always well received.
Having studied textile design at Falmouth College of Arts I had a good basis in design, but I had taught myself to sew on the machine my grandmother had bought me for a birthday present. I think I have this crazy curiosity that I need to know as many techniques as possible. I had specialised in screen print and surface pattern in uni, and my work had been concerned with Americana and the mass produced world, I am heavily influenced by Pop art and have been since my childhood, the bold colours and ironic statements fascinated me.
I think that the ethos of Recycled with Love follows on from my previous work with similar thinkings. The world is far too full of mass produced faceless design and with the current planetary crisis people need to be made more aware that we can't go on producing as much as we do and infact we should start reusing perfectly good items. I love the idea of giving old pieces of fabric new beginings and this is what more of us need to be doing, sustainable design that is fresh and can still be fashion forward.
Now I have boxes and draws full of fabrics waiting eagerly for my next day off! I think people are drawn to their charm as they crave for something individual and lovingly made. This whole 'ikea generation' needs to be outcast, set aside for a new bespoke design future.
